Abstract

Date-of-seeding experiments were carried on at Indian Head, Saskatchewan, from 1954 to 1960, using three late maturing varieties, Redwood, Rocket and B 5128, and two early varieties, Marine and Raja. The varietal yields varied much more among dates than among years. The highest yields from both early- and late-maturing varieties were obtained by planting early. Very late seeding generally resulted in extremely low yields of the late-maturing varieties, while the early-maturing varieties produced a paying crop. With the exception of the late dates of seeding, the late-maturing varieties outyielded the early-maturing varieties of flax. The number of seeds per boll appeared to be a stable varietal characteristic and there were distinct differences among some varieties.Date-of-seeding affected plant height, with all varieties being taller when seeded late. The number of days to maturity differed with dates of seeding …
