Research areas (short description)

José Ygnacio Pastor Caño develops his research on the mechanical behaviour, fracture and reliability of advanced structural materials, with special emphasis on biomaterials, materials for energy applications and historical waxes. His work focuses on the design, characterisation and optimisation of materials subjected to extreme conditions, covering a wide range of temperatures (from -77 K to 2000 K) and diverse environments, from inert atmospheres to aggressive media. In the field of biomaterials, he investigates their mechanical response and durability for applications in prostheses, implants and medical devices, analysing their fatigue behaviour, fracture toughness and biocompatibility. He develops advanced experimental techniques to evaluate their degradation and strength under cyclic loading and in physiological media, which is key to improving their safety and efficacy in medical applications. In structural materials, his research focuses on the optimisation of materials used in sectors such as civil engineering, aerospace and automotive. He has worked on the development of damage and fracture models in composites, advanced metals and high-strength ceramics, using experimental and computational approaches to improve their performance. He has also investigated the ageing of historical materials, such as heritage waxes, applying mechanical characterisation methodologies to assess their long-term stability. He has participated in more than seventy research projects funded by national and international entities, including European projects within the Horizon 2020 programme. His studies have a strong impact on industry, contributing to the development of stronger, safer and more sustainable materials in strategic sectors such as medicine, energy and heritage conservation.
